Akumal retains the charm that many people seek. They remember Playa del Carmen back when it was a very small fishing village and are sad that it has changed so much. Most everywhere on this planet that is beautiful and accessible has changed in the same period of time. But Akumal is blessed with geography that has protected it from the kind of over development that has plagued many communities on the Caribbean coast of Mexico.

The Akumal neighborhoods are small in size and low in number of people. There isn't a continuous beach road - you can't drive along the beach from North Akumal to Aventuras Akumal in the south. That keeps traffic to a minimum and the road safe for pedestrians, bicycles, golf carts and automobiles.
